How to select hand bags

No matter what your employment situation is, carrying all of your necessities in a functional yet stylish bag will make a fashion statement.

Selecting the Handbags:
  • Examine the material and consider whether it's appropriate to the style. Business totes that will function as briefcases should be made of strong, thick materials such as leather or heavy canvas to ensure durability and a long life.

  • Check the straps. Look for seams that are consistent and secure. Opt for styles that have an understrap with no unfinished or raw edges.

  • Consider the strap attachment. Look for reinforced and flawless stitching where the end of the handle meets the top of the bag. Tug gently to test its strength.
  • Test zippers and clasps to ensure that they function properly. Do the teeth of the zipper catch?

  • Inspect the lining. Look for a durable and thick nylon, wool, vinyl or leather lining. Check the inside or the side pockets for any holes or crooked seams.

  • Check for crocking, or color rub-off. Rub the bag gently with a handkerchief to see if any color transfers. Repeat with the handles, concentrating on the underside.

  • Pull at any loose threads. Confirm that they do not start to unravel a seam.

  • Examine any decorative trim such as beads, embroidery, iron appliqués or sequins. Ensure that there are no cracks, chips, splits or unsecured attachments.

Selecting the Handbag for Professional use:

  • Consider your work environment and the dress code, official or unofficial. If you wear suits 90 percent of the time and must convey a very professional appearance, consider a leather bag. If your work environment is less formal, consider bags made of microfiber.

  • Focus on function. Remember what you need to carry: phone, pager, computer disks, pens and pencils, Palm Pilot, organizer, keys, wallet. Look for bags that have built-in pockets or compartments to house some of these accessories.

  • Reflect on your professional wardrobe and choose a color that will complement the majority of your outfits. Black, dark brown and dark gray are standard colors. If you love vibrant colors, however, and can get away with a red handbag on the job, go for it!

  • Choose a bag with trim that flatters your personal style. If your accessories tend to be silver, look at bags with silver trim. If you prefer gold accessories, look at bags that have gold or brass-colored trim.

  • Ask a sales associate for her opinion. It's always great to get a second opinion when purchasing a fashion item that you'll use on a regular basis.
